Health, Beauty, and Nutrition
Science and fashion never seem to run out of new ways to help us look fabulous – and we love them for it. Modern cosmetics are incredible. Our grandmothers couldn’t have imagined ultra-long-lasting, clump-free mascara, much less products like CO2 Lift Pro that can actually accelerate skin healing.
But somewhere in the process of finding the perfect skincare routine and dialing in the ideal shade of eyeshadow, we sometimes forget about the canvas we’re working with. Your body, especially your skin, has a whole lot to do with how you look and how you feel about yourself, doesn’t it? Good nutrition is one of the keys to skin health and healthy skin is beautiful.
Below are some nutrition tips for healthier skin and looking your best.
Water is Essential to Beautiful Skin
Are you drinking enough water? Most people don’t. We don’t mean Diet Coke or Starbucks Frappuccinos. Not all liquids are created equal. Caffeine works well in some topical cosmetics, but drinking a lot of it can actually dry your skin out (caffeine is a diuretic). More than half your body is made up of water, so it’s not hard to understand how not drinking enough of it is bound to have a negative effect on how your look and feel.
Healthy skin requires not only moisture but a body that can properly rid itself of toxins. Water is the vehicle your body uses to move the bad stuff out. When toxins stay behind, they can lead to acne, skin irritation, and overly dry or oily skin among other things. You should drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day. One of the easiest ways to do that is to carry a reusable water bottle.
Carrying a 1L water bottle will help you track your water intake without overthinking it. You can add some things to your water for flavor but try to avoid artificial additives. A squeeze of lime or lemon works and it has the added benefit of helping your body stay pH balanced, which is also great for your skin.
Colorful Fruits and Vegetables are Key
Colorful fruits and vegetables are packed with key nutrients that help make your skin and hair look their best. Remember, the body is constantly rebuilding and repairing itself. That means that making healthy lifestyle choices and a serious commitment to eating your fruit and veg can change the appearance and health of your skin and hair. It’s a fact.
The majority of fruit and vegetables also contain a good amount of fiber which can help you stay regular. Remember what we said about helping your body remove toxins? There is simply no substitute for genuine fresh produce to make you look and feel great. Believe it. Cutting the junk from your diet can also clear up acne and blotchy skin. Give your body the nutrients it needs to build healthy skin, hair, and nails. Make it part of your beauty routine.
Seafood and EFAs for Beauty
Everyone’s hyper-focused on protein these days it seems. It’s not for nothing though, protein is what our body’s tissues are mostly made of (aside from water). Seafood, especially fish, is beauty food. Why do we say that? Simple. Fish has tons of clean, lean protein. Including fish in your diet even a few times a week gives your body what it needs to generate collagen and elastin, the building blocks of new skin.
Fish also contain Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs). Omega-3 and other EFAs are essential for a healthy body. They help your skin stay moist, but not too oily. They also quell inflammation and skin irritation and they’re good for your brain too. Some fish, like wild-caught salmon, have much higher levels of Omega-3 than others though, so be sure to check that when deciding.
But I Hate Fish…
We get it. Seafood and fish aren’t for everyone. But Omega-3s definitely are, so you will want to seek out other sources of them. Flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts have Omega-3s too. But it’s also a good idea to add an Omega-3 supplement to your vitamins (you are taking vitamins, right?). The purified fish oil capsules are a solid source of EFAs. If you’re vegan or want to avoid fish altogether, not to worry, there are vegan Omega-3 supplements out there from companies like Nested Naturals and Naturelo.
